He was responsible for such British films as Billy Liar 1963 and Darling 1965. His first US film, Midnight Cowboy 1969 (Academy Award), was a big commercial success and was followed by Sunday, Bloody Sunday 1971, Marathon Man 1976, Yanks 1979, and Pacific Heights 1990.
